Back in her early working days in the payroll department of a not-small company, my mom was often put in the position of covering for a co-worker who called in sick a lot and took long vacations. This woman's aim, apparently, was to show how invaluable she was--she felt sure things would fall apart without her, and she would receive whatever bennies she felt she deserved. Unfortunately for her, my mom fielded her position just fine, and she was soon out the door.

My mom, however, didn't have to go through the stuff you have to. Oddly enough, the company knew exactly how valuable she was and treated her accordingly. Go figure.

I've run the numbers and barring a Crash of 1929 proportions, I'm bailing at 50. I'll have to work, but I think I can deal with a part-time slot somewhere. Four more years--in a way, it's a long time. In other ways, it's just around the corner.
