Constantine

Just watched Constantine. Well, most of it--missed the first hour because of Countdown, but caught the rest.

What a wonderfully whacked film. I remember Keanu Reeves receiving poor reviews, but I thought he was fine. Ok, he's a rangy brunet, so I'm biased, but I still thought he was fine. Tilda Swinton's Gabriel was riveting. Peter Stormare's Satan. I want to rent it to see what I missed.

My friend who's a big Hellblazer fan wasn't happy with the movie, but I thought it was great fun - I think it's really a matter of expectations. Though for movies with Keanu Reeves and Satan, I think I still favor Devil's Advocate.

Is that the one with Al Pacino as Satan. I must look into that as well.

Hunting down movies I've missed over the years. I must have a book due.

That's the one! There's something very Milton about Pacino's Satan; it was nicely done.

Oh, and of course, no discussion of movies in which Old Hob appears would be complete without The Prophesy. Viggo Mortensen as the Devil, /and/ Christopher Walken as the creepiest Gabriel ever. Really, what's not to like?

Lucifer . o O ( Still not King. )

Totaly with you - Tilda Swinton is always Bad in White - here, and in Narnia. (That's Bad as in very good at doing Bad - and God help everyone in range if she ever shows up at the Oscars in White-on-white). (Hmmm. I'm not totally with you - I'm a sucker for curvy brunettes, and Rachel Weisz is high on that list).

(I did love the holy-water sprinker-system, amongst other bits that do a great job of capturing the essence of John's attitude and environment).

The visuals in Constantine give me hope that an eventual "Something from the Nightside" movie might actually not suck.

(I suspect that your weather and mine are from different planets, btw - low 80's, sunny, breezy - great day for a bike ride if I didn't have a major head-cold)

arrgh. "totaly" = "totally" as typed by a klutz.

The F/X were very cool. Hell was Hell.

I have to admit that I liked Constantine when I saw it. Just fun. I like Rachel Weisz too.

I think this is the first time I've seen her. She was good.

But I am a Keanu Reeves fan.

Rachel Weisz . . . The Mummy movies. Those are very fun too. I like Keanu Reeves sometimes, and not others. But I always like looking at him.

I'm a huge Hellblazer fan. As soon as I heard Reeves had been cast as Constantine, my expectations became that it would resemble the comics in name only. I wound up being pleasantly surprised (if you can call anything about that movie pleasant) by how much of the tone and visual style they got right. And Tilda Swinton ... wow. She always knocks my socks off.

I'd never read the comic books so I wasn't upset over the casting of an American brunet instead of a British blond. I thoroughly enjoyed it, thought the casting on the whole was top-notch, and Peter Stormare scared the shit out of me as Lucifer.

I'm a fairly typical upset one. It's not the American brunet vs British blond, it's Keanu Reeves vs almost any other actor. He's very bad at disappearing into a role, so he doesn't work for roles where Keanu Reeves playing X is inappropriate.

Hmmm... I am not familiar with the Hellblazer storyline at all, so had no expectations. I wouldn't know what was considered right or wrong, so it all worked for me.

Heh. I'm not real familiar with it either. But Reeves is a reliable way to jar me out of suspension of disbelief. Yay for being a teen when the man was doing his teen movie phase...
