Finally broke down in a big way and purchased all six seasons of Buffy. The last straw came last night. The local Fox station has been fairly steady over the last few months, running from season 2 to season 3 with nothing more unusual than a few skipped episodes. The first dropped ball came two or so weeks ago, when they replaced an end of season 3 episode with one from the end of season 7. Then last night, they replaced the scheduled season 4 ep (featuring Spike, I might add) with the very first show. ProtoBuffy. Episode 1 from Season 1--Welcome to the Hellmouth.

That tore it. I actually broke down and rescinded my years-long BBR boycott in order to get all 6 seasons for a nonbank-breaking price. Be that as it may--I find the thought of no longer having to rely on the whims of the local station strangely liberating.

And I will be able to watch Buffy anytime I want.

That's how I felt about Firefly, and is why I own those DVDs. (I liked Firefly better than Buffy or Angel.)

I've heard good things about Firefly. I'm not drawn to SF on film, though. Can't explain why. Never watched Trek after TOS. Never watched an episode of B5. Loved Alien and Aliens for the horror aspects.

Horror I generally skip. I watched Aliens on a 24" tv from about 20 feet away with the sound turned nearly off (I'm a wuss). I adored TOS Star Trek, watched a bit of the others although they didn't excite me the same way (I was older, too), and liked Star Wars (first two of them), but I don't know if that counts as SF, being more space opera.

Firefly is more like Bonanza or another Western, but the stakes are higher. There's a grit and reality and humor that I adore, and interesting characters. If you get a chance, try renting "Shindig" and see what you think. It's wonderful. If a show makes me care passionately about what happens to these people, then I watch.

I adored West Wing when Sorkin was still working on it. I like what I've seen of "One Tree Hill" which just appeared on my local station last week. I liked Babylon 5, preferred Crusade, and stay far away from any incarnation of Outer Limits. And I avoid sitcoms because the characters are almost never "real" but only there to make us laugh. Not worth my time.

One of my favorite movies is "The Replacements" with Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman. Humor, great characters, a fairy-tale/Age of Chivalry plot, and the best rendition of "I Will Survive" I've heard yet.

But no horror. (Eeeee!)
