It's a grey, foggy winter morning of the type I always associate with February-early March. Rain is dripping from the ice/snow packed gutters. Crows are gliding back and forth and cawing. I haven't been outside yet to get the papers--and dread the prospect, frankly--but I hope the rain washes off the snow cover before it all freezes tonight and the rain turns to snow.

They're not expecting much snow, but they've been wrong before.

Coffee is brewing. Never was it needed more.

Today, I hope to start on the receipt collation for the accountant, and maybe dump some paper along the way. Dinner will be salmon loaf, a recipe I pulled off the web involving black beans and a Dijon mustard sauce. It's a salmon loaf kinda day.

Update: rain, rain, rain, and snow cover and frozen ground. Trekked down to the basement to toss in a load of laundry, and was treated to the sight of puddles. Three, so far, caused by seepage where wall meets floor. Looks like some foundation work may be in my future.

Yea.

Puddles in your basement? That's scary! We'll hope they go away and don't happen again.

A rainy stay at home kind of day sounds lovely. I had chores and errands yesterday and today, and still haven't sorted out the tax stuff. Maybe tomorrow will be quiet.

Unfortunately, I've seen these puddles before, and will likely see them again. When there's no place for the water to go, it tends to turn up in particular places.

Turned out to be a blah day. I managed to set up the spreadsheet, and entered all of one month's data. Then part 2 of Pride & Prejudice came on, thank God. It was the sort of thing I needed to watch today.

And I'm afraid the general cadence of the dialogue has stuck with me. One of the worst scenes I ever wrote--I think it's buried in the bowels of the old Gateway--was a scene for one of the Jani books, *after* I had watched All About Eve. If you've seen that film--it's dated, but I still recommend it--you'll know that that wasn't really a good fit. But I'm an awful mimic when it comes to dialogue tone.

Darn on the puddles!

I love P&P. I have two BBC versions, and can't decide which I like better.

You've given me an idea. I'm trying to write a character, whose dialog is limp, and it needs to be racy. I'll hunt down a movie with a similar character and watch how he talks. It can't hurt, and maybe it'll help. Thanks!

Do you have the 1985 version with David Rintoul as Darcy and Elizabeth Garvey (I think that's her name) as Eliza? It was my preferred version for a long time, although I confess that the Firth-Ehle version is growing on me. Firth is too bit-o-the-rough to qualify as my Dream Darcy, but he does tongue-tied social maladroit well, and Ehle is very good--I like the way she blows at her bangs and rolls her eyes in the beginning when she tries to make conversation with Darcy. But I thought Garvie was stunning, and that the actress who played her sister Jane had a little more life to her. I also think that Mrs Bennett is played a little too broadly in the Firth-Ehle, with almost a Tom Jones over-the-topness to her that doesn't strike me as authentic Austin. But I confess to a lack of knowledge of the literature of the period.

Yep. Those are the two I've got. I like Rintoul a lot better as Darcy, and Garvey a lot better as Eliza. But I thought Firth's acting did portray Darcy's nature better, and I thought that Mrs. Bennett in the Firth/Ehle version was perfect. Plus in the Firth/Ehle version, Mr. Collins was so well done!

No, Austin didn't overstate Mrs. Bennet's character that much, but I have a hunch that in her time she would have been seen as being as out-of-line as Steadman portrays her for us.

Yeah, that's what I said, more or less.

Mostly dry this morning, although the biggest puddle still required squeegeeing. But if we have a rapid thaw or more rain, it will happen again.
