Sunday morning
Feb. 10th, 2008 08:34 amI need an icon of an ice cube.
We're under Wind Chill Warning. According to the Weather page of the Trib website:
A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and
strong winds will create dangerously low wind chill values. This
will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia or death if
precautions are not taken.
In my case, wind chill temps are about 25-30F below zero (minus 32 to minus 34C). I think it takes human flesh a half hour to freeze at those temps. Good news--it warms into the teens tomorrow. Bad news--we could get another round of snow Monday into Tuesday. They don't say how much. The word they use is "accumulating". This could mean a few inches, which is messy but drivable, to a foot, which is more messy and not nearly as drivable, as indicated by last week's blown vacation day. At least I can get the dayjob laptop to work from home now.
And one of the weather guys says that we may have two more rounds of snow coming after tomorrow's snow, We received more snow the first week of February than we usually do for the entire month. I AM SICK OF WINTER. And Winter laughs and says, "Tough."
Winter plays a prominent role in the wip. No freepin' wonder.
Cookies have been baked for neighbors--boy, they came out good. Will take them over tomorrow, after the wind dies and temps rise but hopefully before the snow starts.
Took iMac to Apple store for drop-off. Genius Bar guy looked up the ticket and listened to my explanation. Thought, as I did, that maybe a reset was all that was necessary...except that he hit the Power button and my iMac TURNED RIGHT ON. Genius was nice. Said that if something happens with the power-up system--my name for it because I forgit what he called it but it affects the booting up and shutting down, not the hard drive or contents thereof--it can take a half-hour or so for it to clear/reset/whatever before the system will turn on again. But, he said they'd keep iMac and run it through their 24-hour diagnostic check, and replace anything that needs replacing. I mentioned that I never turn my system off, and he said that especially with older systems (mine is 3.5 years old) it's a good idea to restart them or even shut them down for a little while about once a week. Diagnostic and clean-up programs run during that time, so it's just another part of system housekeeping. I had been told previously that you never need to turn a system off, and mine was on almost constantly for 3 years without an issue. But from now on, I'll be shutting it down every so often.
So, left my iMac behind. Grabbed a cup of mocha and a cookie. Then had it register that there is a Sephora store RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the Apple Store. Skin care and computers. If there'd been a hardware store anywhere in the vicinity, I'd have been even more screwed than I was at that moment. Anyway, I limited the damage to lip gloss and skin cream, but I am a member of their buying club now so Oh Hell.
Never got around to working on setting up the home wireless yesterday. The time allotted for that was spent chipping ice off my driveway. Snow had melted thanks to the couple of days of above freezing temps, and I should have cleared things then. But I delayed, and thanks to that I now have about a inch of ice coating the lower third of my driveway. There's a thin layer of snow covering it now, which will either provide traction or a lesson in just how low a coefficient of friction can go. I'll find out when I gird up to go outside and get the newspapers. But I need to finish my coffee first. This could take some time, she said as she listened to the wind.

Date: 2008-02-10 05:08 pm (UTC)Welp, you win the driveway length competition. *g*
I'm now hearing that Monday's snow will be in the 1-3" to 2-4" range. A pain, now that the roads are finally clear, but workable.
Second load of laundry has been put in the dryer. Dinner--leftover roast beef with noodles and tomatoes en casserole--has been put in the oven. Still haven't gone out to get the paper.
