I'm in the midst of sorting through months' worth of receipts and papers. Filing. Prepping for taxes. Just plain decluttering my office so I can work. Hell, so I have a bit of clear desk large enough to set down my coffee cup.

The purge is winding down--I'm down to those last few small stacks that always take longer to sort than the piles that reach your knees. The usual decisions apply--do I really need to keep this? If I do keep it, where in hell do I put it? So, I have pages 2-8 of this very interesting article--where in hell is page 1?

Over the course of this muckenfuss, I found I have misplaced something that I really ought not to have misplaced. I need it on Monday. I am pretty sure that the world won't end if I can't find it, but it would make life easier if I had it in hand now.

I thought it was buried on my messy desk, but it did not turn up over the course of the careful picking-through of the box of stuff removed from said desk. It was too big to have been accidentally tossed over the course of the sorting, although I fear it could have been tossed out during some earlier, less careful cleanup, when I wasn't thinking about how much I needed it. There's an outside chance that I left it at work, and I am debating going in first thing tomorrow morning to see if it's there.

Blasted thing.

That is a horrible feeling. I know it all too well. Damndamndamn indeed!

My most recent experience of something similar was this afternoon when I lost my keys. I had a vivid memory of locking the back door on the inside and going out the kitchen door...so I had to have had keys with me. Went and did chores, came back in, unlocked the front door to put the pillows out to sun on the sunny side of the house, came back through, locked the door again (anyone who steals old pillows in the sun needs them worse than I do...) and then...after a trip to the bathroom...they were gone. Not on the hook, or the kitchen table, or in the back door, or on the freezer or the dryer, not in the bathroom or my study or the bedroom.

I had put them in the pocket of my little backpack, but had forgotten that's where I put them, until I remembered the previous "lost keys" episode...that lasted two days before I thought "Did you really feel all the way to the bottom of that outside pocket???"

And the answer was no.

That's happened to me, with keys. My debit card. Honestly, sometimes I feel like I shouldn't be let out by myself.
