Is anyone else noticing that the latest version of Firefox occasionally steers you toward third party programs? This has happened to me twice in the last week--one was to a registry clean-up program and the other was supposed to fix errors in, iirc, the registry. Both the detour signs had the Firefox logo in the corner, so either Firefox is in partnership with these folks (or they're Firefox programs) or someone has figured out how to hack Firefox quite neatly.

I was using Firefox as my default browser, but I don't like this stuff. I have also noticed that I need to close down and restart FF every so often because links stop working. It just doesn't seem to be working as smoothly as it did when I first got it.

I haven't noticed any third-party links or suggestions for software in Firefox. Maybe I'm just lucky that way. Been using it for years on both the PC and now on this iMac.

FF does need to be shut down now and again, or at least have its cache emptied, or it slows down... and sometimes takes so much resources it slows the whole 'puter.

You could try Safari. It's quite stable, and speedy. I think the latest is v.2, if you have Tiger. There's a public beta of v.3, which Apple has also ported to Windows, but I haven't tried it, on either platform.

Safari does MUCH better with Java applets than FF on my Mac. It's a good browser. I'm sticking with FF because there are some FF extensions I use and like; if not for those, I might switch to Safari full-time.

Oh, if you prefer Mozilla, you could try out Camino. It's from the Mozilla project also.

I have both Safari and Camino. I forgot why I downloaded Firefox, but I do recall that Safari tended to choke on my credit union's online site, as well as other secure pages. Maybe that's gotten better.

I have emptied the FF cache fairly regularly. But that funneling over to other programs bugs me.
