The writing life

At this point, I'm used to people asking me, sometimes jokingly and sometimes not so, when the books will be made into a movie.

I'm just not used to them asking me in the middle of the company credit union, over the lunch hour, in a loud voice, when the place is busy and all the tellers are listening.

Not so gallant me, I'm afraid. I said "I don't even know how to answer that question."

Someone asked George Martin that this past weekend, and he said along the lines of scripts get made, deals get arranged, deals fall through, who knows? It's a crapshoot.

He was dismayed, I think, that Heroes has received so much attention and praised when Wild Cards has been doing something similar for years. But I haven't read int hat series so maybe I didn't understand the conversation.

It's like, yeah, I knew how to answer. I just didn't KNOW how to ANSWER. Frankly, I didn't have the energy.

You could always visibly ponder the question and then respond with, "I give up. When?" ;-)

Bwah! Do you mind if I steal that?

heh--I'll probably use it, too. so if you're asking me, feel free!

And if you're asking me, not at all. Enjoy. :-)

I'm still at the stage of the awkward "When is your next book coming out?"

Guess it's a good problem, though. :)

I got that one earlier that same day. I was glad I had an answer *this* time. Now I need to work on having an answer for when someone asks next year.

Because it's a hamster wheel. It never ends.

Thanks to Harry Potter, I don't get asked when the movie of my book will be made. I get asked, "So, you going to be the next J.K. Rowling?"

One day I'll get up the nerve to answer: "No, sorry. Thought about that, decided I'd rather not go that route after all, thanks."

I was once asked the more generic, "Hey, don't you wish you'd written Harry Potter?" Well, yeah, OK, next question.

I do hear, "You could be the next JK Rowling." I just smile. I mean, what the hell can you say?

I've always wondered why people would want to be a famous and filthy rich person. Personally, I'd rather be a totally unknown filthy rich person. Think of all the garbage that goes along with fame that you wouldn't have to put up with - no cameras in your face, no paparazzi hassling my friends and family, no court appearances against said paparazzi ...

"What are you talking about? It already is a movie. You should NetFlix it!"

heh.

"Didn't you see me at the Oscars?"
