One of the books on the ever-growing TBR stack is Dan Simmons' The Terror. The dedication reads: "This book is dedicated, with love and many thanks for the indelible Arctic memories, to Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Douglas Spencer, Dewey Martin, William Self, George Fenneman, Dmitri Tiomkin, Charles Lederer, Christian Nyby, Howard Hawkes, and James Arness."

It didn't hit me until I saw Arness' name. Simmons dedicated his book to the cast and production team of the movie The Thing. Given the book's storyline, it makes sense.

Cool.

I stopped short at George Fenneman--I remember him mostly as being Groucho Marx's sidekick on You Bet Your Life!

I honestly couldn't place anyone until I came to Arness. Then I had a V-8 Moment.

An intellectual carrot... the mind boggles.

It *is* a great and utterly subtle nod. I'm actually a fan of both Hawks' take on the story, and of John Carpenter's (Though I admit that the potential mash-up of that version with Escape from New York could have belly-laugh potential...

ummm... I've muchly enjoyed your work. Finding the balance point of a human and nonhuman/not-quite-human point of view and being able to capture it is something I've always loved reading/seeing/hearing - something I adored in Jo Clayton's work, as well.

Do you prefer not to be "friended" by lurking fans, or may I add you? (reciprocity not required)

Cheers,

Please--friend away. I always appreciate hearing from Jani-fans.

I don't always friend back due to time--I'm having trouble keeping up with the current Friends list as it is. But I always appreciate folks dropping by. Shout-outs from lurkers always welcome.
