Ok, the intricacies of pay-out.

It's more set fee and royalties. This book was part of a two-book contract. Upon signing, I was paid 1/3 of the entire contract amount. Then, after I turned in the outline for the book that became CONTACT IMMINENT, I received the second 1/3 of the contracted payout for that particular book. Then it progressed. When the final version of CI was turned in, I got the last third. When I turned in the ENDGAME outline, the second third for that book, and now this final third. If I earn out the advance for ENDGAME, I will receive royalties.

As for dependence upon numbers sold...well, what one gets for the current contract is in a way based on the previous sales figures, so they impact the contract that way. But sales for ENDGAME are future sales that can't really be guesstimated, so I get the advance, which I can hopefully earn out, so that I can receive royalties.
