Unpacking

My section moved while I was on vacation. Yes, they did tell me, and they even gave me time to pack. Stuff was moved while I was at Wiscon--came in yesterday to find it all waiting for me.

I don't know what I hate more, packing or unpacking.

These are nicer cubes, with updated furniture and more storage space. The neatest thing is this modular locker on wheels, which has a lockable compartment for hanging coats and storing one's purse and such, three shelves and two file drawers and takes up less than a square yard of floor space. I stuck a green plastic lizard to the side, as a way of making it my very own.

As I unpacked, I tossed files I hadn't dug into in years. I think I cleared out the equivalent of a file drawer-full. The only stuff I have left to sort through are the Current Project files, of which there are many. Got hold of a wire file holder/separator thingie to go with the filled plastic one I already have and will stash them both on my desk's Dead Zone, the area where I can't pull up my chair. This will free up the L-wing that faces the entrance for use as actual workspace.

These cube walls are lower. Since I face a window, that means things are much brighter than before. I'll be able to take home the extra desk light that I bought to brighten up the dark corners.

We've got this metal slider thing on one side that holds plastic file holders, In boxes, pencil and paper clip holders and some sort of platform thingie that no one can figure out what to do with. I put a plastic frog in mine.

In other news, I figured out when I arrived at work that I had put my shirt on backwards. It's only a mock t-neck, so no readjustment required--the only giveaway is that the collar seam is facing the front instead of the back. Not like I put an oxford shirt on backwards or anything. I'm not yet that far gone.

Moving desks/cubes is always a good time to get rid of accumulated stuff that you didn't even remember having :)

Last time they moved us, it was a building to building move, which was worse. Yes, you still get to throw out stuff, but then you find nifty things other people (for unknown reasons) want to leave or throw out (computer peripherals and software, some of which had cost lotsa dough when they were bought and are still serviceable) and you end up picking up more stuff. Luckily, I took those home, since our new cubes are yuckier and smaller... glad your new cube is nicer--if you gotta live in a cube, it'd better be a nice cube... :)

Like the idea of the plastic lizard and frog to mark your cubittory :)

The funny thing is, I'm not even that much of a frog/lizard fan. An ages-ago cubemate bought a pack of plastic figures to use in a practical joke, and I inherited them when he went to another job. I just spread them out around the cube.

Then there's the framed photo of a lizard on my desk. I think I got it at a Windycon a few years ago. The photographer was also offering a diptych of a squirrel circling the trunk of a tree. I liked that photo, but the lizard just spoke to me. It's looking straight into the camera, with a "Hey!" look on its face.
