I have mentioned before that parts of my house were assembled...let's say haphazardly and leave it at that.
The chimney stent/flue liner was not installed because you need an 8" diameter flue to do that and mine is only 6". Yes, the flue had accumulated debris over the years, but that wasn't my problem.
The jury-rigged, deteriorating mess of connections around my furnace and hot water heater were the problems. That has all been replaced. I now also have a two-stage thermostat to go with the furnace. Should've had it installed when the new furnace was put in, but we won't talk about that.
The furnace now runs quieter. It is possible, I suppose, that energy savings over the next couple of years will balance out this repair bill.
Our furnace is still holding, but we will have the same problem with the new energy-efficient furnaces not working with our existing chimney stack. Glad yours is working properly!
Yeah. I probably should've waited a few days before balancing the checkbook, though. Dammit.
Because you can't see it. I mean, I see the Nifty! New! thermostat every time I walk down the hallway, and I can detect a difference in how the furnace runs. But it's not the same as, say, new rugs or a new couch.

Date: 2006-12-17 08:04 pm (UTC)It's hard to take the long view some times. No capital outlay is easy, even when you sort of expect it. (At least in my experience.)
I am glad to hear the problems have been fixed though.
