In the forest, being close to their mother could make okapi calves vulnerable. Newborns give off no scent, but their mothers may attract predators such as leopards. Newborns also do not defecate for their first 30 to 50 days, helping to keep their trails hidden. Their systems metabolize all of their mother's milk.
