If the last few days have been any indication, it's going to be a rockin' and rollin' stormy summer. Cool weather ramped up into the high 80s--Kuro's temp gauge read 89F on the drive home yesterday--with a dew point of 75. This means that a two-minute walk across the backyard was enough to turn one onto a sweat-drenched puttyball. We usually don't see this level of humidity until August.

The dogs definitely felt the heat. By the time I let them out, about 2/3 of the backyard was shaded--they kept to the shade, jumping around for a few minutes only until reality set in and they said the doggy version of the hell with it. Much flopping down and rolling in the grass ensued. Further deconstruction of the remains of the Air Kong. And slo-mo tag, which is tag played at a slow walk, which is fairly amusing to watch.

I also filled the wading pool, which thrilled King to no end. When he first ran into the backyard, he made the usual beeline for Mickey. Then he saw the filled pool, and I swear he smiled. His step lightened, and he flopped right in. Splashed, sat down, drank, stood up, got out, got in again, splashed, etc. By the time he made the circuit a couple of times, half the water had sloshed out of the pool and what remained was muddy, but he didn't care. He's a Water Dog, and he was a happy boy.

Mickey does not appear to be a Water Dog. His interest in the pool only extended to an occasional sip of the (muddy) pool water. He does not like to walk about in the rain, either, again in contrast to King, who doesn't seem to take much notice of weather in general.

During the night, a storm passed through, bringing with it a 30-degree drop in temp. It was still cold this morning, when yet another storm passed through. It's supposed to heat back up to the 80s this afternoon, with the warm/storm pattern continuing through the weekend. Don't know when I'll get a chance to cut the grass. I'll be at Wiscon next weekend, which means I had better get to it this weekend or I'll have to use a machete to chop my way through the greenery.

My section will be moving to a new office area early next week, so I spent part of yesterday and this morning packing. I have Too Many Files. Still undecided whether I should go through them today or wait until I get downstairs (the new office area is 2 floors below the current).

I want to get myself a cubewarming gift, probably a plant of some sort. I bought a terrarium when I moved to this cube five years ago. It did pretty well until last winter, at which time I wasn't in the office much and neglected to ask anyone else to water it. Thus did a pretty nice croton bite the dust. Poor thing. Don't want that to happen again.

You mean there are places where summer doesn't normally begin in May? :-)

I'm having to remind myself not to wish folks a good summer when I correspond with them, because we're so deeply into same here, for all that we've not yet hit 100, quite. Any day now ...

Back in the days when we had the old furnace, I used to tell my Dad to pleeeze not shut down the pilot light until after Memorial Day. Invariably, we would have an April/May warm snap, he'd shut down the pilot light, and evening temps would plummet to the 40s.

We usually don't get consistently warm nights until June.

The temps this month have been so up and down, it's a wonder we aren't suffering through some sort of respiratory disease epidemic. We've gone from A/C to furnace and back again within a day or two. Coat in the morning--sweat in the afternoon. It's nuts.

We can get that in April--45 at 7 a.m., 85 at 3 p.m. Ahhh, the desert.

Right now it's blowing up a wild gale, and about 83 very dry degrees. Not too bad for temp, not so good in the sandblasting department.

My Cardi loves his little pool. My Dobie delicately steps around it on her way to drink from the water bucket. She hates rain and will come inside and look Offended while the King of the Welsh Marches is out happily thundering around in it.

It's thunderbumping here at the moment. Raining like a pistol, water dripping from the gutters, a constant reminder that I didn't clean them as well as I thought I had. Just before the rain began, I tried to put King in his kennel. He choose that time to bolt, leaving me to search for him as the storm clouds closed in and the skies darkened and the thunder grew louder and louder. Finally tracked him to the new neighbors' backyard. They're nice folks--they think King is such a good-looking dog, and they told me that if he ever bolts over there again they will shut their gate and keep him in their yard until I can come and collect him.

His Highness was ticked that he was shorted on play time, however. Doesn't care about rain and thunder--he just wants to run. Wouldn't eat dinner. Went in his house and pouted instead, and would barely look at me when I called to him.

The backyard is a puddled mess. More rain expected tonight. I can hear the grass growing.

Your rainstorms have been rumbling on east right through northeast Ohio. We got hammered yesterday (my sister had a tree fall on her house), today was sunny, hot (83! It is NEVER 83 degrees in May) and humid and the storms you had earlier in the day are supposed to hit us sometime after midnight.

The drainage ditch that bisects the yard has been full of water for so long that a pair of mallard ducks has taken to visiting it every day.
