Sunday morning
Sep. 3rd, 2006 09:10 amI didn't get as much written yesterday as I wanted. The reasons were legion--the usual errands, unforeseen vet visit (see below), and the simple struggle with a chapter that proved more transitional than I thought it would.
Reasons for an action to be taken needed to be laid out and discussed, and over the course of working out those reasons, I learned something about two of my characters. After dealing with them for over ten years/4.5 books, it proved as much of a surprise as it would have if they'd been flesh and blood.
Then came the headsmack moment. Because as I thought about what I had written about them so far, I realized that it was pretty much all there, even though it hadn't been discussed in any great depth. That my discovery was simply an uncovering. Obvious now that I've figured it out.
The wonder of it is how well it slides into place, fits with this book and falls in line with all the previous ones, deepens and defines two difficult characters, provides reasons for an action they took two decades before as well as the actions they will be taking. And this revelation came about as I constructed a discussion about a pivotal aspect of idomeni theology, which sounds about as exciting as Cream of Wheat on toast. Except that Val and John are the ones who explain it, and reveal as they do so how it impacted their first stay in Rauta Sheraa, and why they treated Jani as they did, and how they developed as doctors.
My backbrain does the writing. I just channel it.
In other news, Mickey has allergies. They seem to be mild, but in his case they lead to foot-licking, which over the course of the last week led to two abraded footpads, one of which was so roughed up it looked at though it had been sliced with a knife. I tried treating it myself, but I worried about infection, and what better time for an infection to present than a long holiday weekend? So I called the vet yesterday morning, and they squeezed me in. Mick got his foot bandaged, and a steroid shot, and a wash for his other feet, which had taken on the distinctive yeasty smell of feet that had been licked a lot. I am also to dose him with Benedryl 2x a day. Follow-up visit on Tuesday.

Date: 2006-09-03 03:42 pm (UTC)Mickey also did Something to his right shoulder. It seems to wax/wane, improve for a time, then re-torque itself if he moves too quickly. I have a feeling that another regimen of Rimadyl is in his future.
This just has not been a good summer for little Mickey.
