dancinghorse. Good comments, and proof once again that I didn't really fool anyone when I thought I had tucked those loose ends under good and tight. Those itty-bitty plot issues that dropped into my head at 430 this morning? dancinghorse picked up on some of those, so it wasn't just post-draft paranoia on my part. But she thinks the story works overall. I fixed the timing problem. The backstory insertions work.
Blasted thing is 1/5 of a book, or about 6 chapters. Given that I usually need that many pages to hit story stride...I'll just say that writing this has proven a most educational experience. The thing I'm noticing...if I think I'm moving things too quickly, rushing a bit, it seems to be the right pace for a shorter work. Interesting.
Now, I really, really need to work on Jani 5. Words and phrases suitable for titles dropped into my head today. I hope something shakes out because I need to get rid of Endgame, which imho lacks punch.
