There some lovely stuff done with this in Scott Westerfeld (http://www.scottwesterfeld.com/)'s brilliant YA novel Peeps (http://www.scottwesterfeld.com/books/peeps.htm).

Interleaved between the narrative chapters are lots of "in voice" discussions of parasites and the science behind them. It's great, and really adds to the main story, but there is a certain ICK factor in some of the science bits--but it's well-researched ICK. (And I bet that plays really well with teen boys who actually read.)
