Jani looked up to find John standing before her. Sensed the stares of the others in the room, some sidelong, the rest pointed. No one else spoke. No one else breathed, or so it seemed.
"There's something I have to show you." John's voice sounded as always, cemetery-smooth and measured as a meterstick. He looked a little tired, but didn’t they all?
Bastard. Jani thought the word more label than curse, like tall or light-eyed. A descriptor . Or in John's case, a character trait.
