It always happens. This two sides to the story thing.

Another take on Joss's women, with this interesting line:

"What is it with Whedon and strong women? Not Whedon and strong "girls", or at least his version thereof - they all get happy endings, even when they are, in fact, unacknowledged sexual abusers*. But what happens to his women?"

I'm not sure I accept it--some of his men don't end up particularly well either, and given that the story is about character growth, particulary Buffy's growth, I can see why he did things the way he did--but it's a point of view.

I enjoyed that link. I'm not a big Whedon fan. Had a lot of problems with Buffy beginning with the first episode. I haven't seen every ep, but did enjoy some, like the musical. Can't stand Firefly--makes me want to poke my eyes out.

The only Whedon show I've seen in Buffy. Do I have issues with the show--oh, yes, and they're working together to compel me to commit Essay. Which should scare any right-thinking person.

Odd sychronicity. On the Asimov boards, I was just talking about Whedon's limited set of characters* and how poor the odds were for any female on ANGEL to make to the the last show alive and non-monstrous, which for some reason I had never noticed before.

* Buffy isn't Angel isn't Mal but all of them are mopey and all of them have zero chance of a happy relationship.

The Buffy discussion is combining with the hard fantasy discussion in [livejournal.com profile] matociquala's LJ. I may post later this evening, after I've had time to ponder.

All I will say is that I enjoy Buffy. Some of the episodes have become like favorite books. But the underpinnings of that world are slight to nonexistent, and this has at times driven me nuts.
