Reading.

Voice isn't enough. It can rivet for a time, but if there's no Body to back it up, it devolves into Noise.

MTV scattershot imagery isn't enough. Cool can be marvelous, but it requires some context, something to anchor to.

Speeding up the On ramp and merging at 90 mph can be an exciting experience, but after a while, you need a rest stop. Or at least a roadsign telling you where the hell you are.

I'm just saying.

Journeys. If you're going to wind up somewhere, there needs to be a There there.

I think I'm getting old. Or something.

I don't mean to be coy, or irritatingly arcane, but damn it, you know, *character*.

I'm with you on all the above. I'm reading a Mary Stewart book from 1961 and there's actually scene, characterizaton, background and mood and a nice slow building up to something that promises to be REALLY BIG. What a nice change from today's "MTV-books."
