A few minutes after I posted, the power went out. It came back on around 530am. Comcast was still out when I left to come to work. I had to detour around fallen wires, and there are trees down everywhere. I don't know what happened--microburst, an actual touch-down. The winds ripped through for several minutes just before the power went out, so the damage must have occurred then.

I was thisclose to losing stuff in the fridge--the thermometer had just risen above 40F when the power came back on. Deep freeze looked ok.

I'd had a load of laundry in the washer. Finished that up this morning.

If the power hadn't come back on, I'm not sure what I would have done with the pups. Record-setting heat expected today, so outdoors wouldn't be an option. But with the A/C out, indoors would be like an oven.

If cable doesn't come back, could be a quiet weekend. OTOH, I could get a lot of stuff done....

The end of the week. NADWcon is next week, and Holy Hanna but it can't come soon enough. Friends. The Farmers Market. The Concourse Hotel. State Street, with its coffee shops and cool restaurants. It's going to take a 20-mule team to drag me home.

Tomorrow night, Joshua Bell at Ravinia. First they said it would storm, then not. Now the storms are back on again. I'll be under a shelter, but still. If rains will come, I would rather they held off until I get home.

And no more power outages. Please?

Out on the deck. It's warm, but not as warm as predicted. Windy--I have to position the brollie carefully or it tips. Salad supper--pasta pesto and chicken w/ tarragon. Very good. So was the pinot noir with dark chocolate.

The cable returned, obviously, or I wouldn't be posting now. I came home for lunch to find the TV on and the internetz functioning. Had to change the batteries on the phone--they had depleted during the outage, shutting down the phone and sending incoming calls to the fax machine. I love technology.

Anyway. Phone's fixed. Go me.

Last night's storm was pretty horrific. 94 mph gusts clocked at Waukegan Harbor, and baseball-sized hail in the city. A block from me, the wind burst felled entire trees. I've been seeing crews out all day, and roads were blocked by downed branches and power lines. Not a drop of rain here. Just the wind.

I need to figure out what clothes to pack for NADWcon. I think I have a reading--I need to print out pages. I need to get as much done this weekend as possible because Thursday morning will be here before I know it.

The pups are spoiled--I'm outside, and they're inside. The A/C, doncha know. Tender little sprouts are they.

G*d, I need a vacation. Next year will be 25 years (ack!) at the day job, which means I get another week for a total of five. I could use one of those weeks now. No, the way things are shaping up, I don't think I can ask for unpaid time. Gonna be a busy rest of the year.

Birds are singing. It's a little too windy to be out, but hell with it.
