Got up a little too early for a Saturday morning--6am, which I know is the middle of the day for some folks--to get self and pups ready for the 8am vet appointment. Gaby was just due for her bordatella vaccine, but King needed the works: Lyme titer check, vaccines, bloodwork. King was nervy, as usual. Knew where he was going, and didn't want to go. Whimpered and whined upon arrival, sniffed and marked the entire yard in the front of the office, and paced the floor and pawed me once we got into the exam room.
He's gained 6 pounds, unfortunately, up to 116 from 110, which could be the lack of activity over the last few weeks thanks to the weather. Hoping that Spring and more exercise will help, because he is still getting the same amount of food. I learned that they've tweaked their treatment of Lyme--if King's titer is low and the infection he had vanquished, he will receive a special vaccine that does not interact with whatever remains in his system (dead bacteria or antibodies--didn't think to ask which). In the past, they didn't revaccinate because it was felt that the old infection offered some degree of protection, but they have found that it does not. If King were bitten by an infected tick, he could be reinfected. So, waiting for the result of the test.
One hitch in the works. King has had a little lump near his left rear ankle for several years. Former vet felt it at that time--since it moved and it wasn't rooted, she suggested I keep an eye on it, but didn't seem very concerned. Well, it has gotten a little bigger, so I mentioned it to current vet. She wasn't quite so sanguine about it, and suggested a quick needle biopsy to see if she could tell what it was. She wasn't able to check it until after I left, so I came home and fed the pups and waited for her to call, which she did. Results, unfortunately, were inconclusive. Even so, because of King's age and the fact that the mass felt firm, vet recommended removal. So, I will be taking King in Tuesday morning for surgery.
Good thoughts appreciated. Let this be benign. If it isn't, well, it appears to be confined to one area and has been very slow growing, so that's something. It would mean that we would need to keep a closer eye on King. He's going to be 9 this month, which equals 71 in human years. I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around that.
