Marrow bones.

Went to the grocery store and headed straight for the meat section, where they sometimes have soup bones. Another woman beat me to them--I watched her pick up almost all the packages, and was ready to ask her to leave one when she put one in her cart and put the rest back. Then I started picking through the packages, and she smiled and asked if I was getting bones for my dogs. I explained about Gaby's tartar problem, and she reiterated the once-a-week bone thing. I am kicking myself for forgetting this.

Home. Fed the pups, then let them out into the backyard and handed out the bones as dessert. King took his and immediately started toying with it. Gaby, on the other hand, accepted her bone with a puzzled "what am I supposed to do with this?" She walked around with it for a minute or so, than put it down on the ground and did what she when I gave her soft food for the first time. She tried to roll in it. But the bone apparently didn't lend itself to that, so she nibbled at it for a time. Then, finally, she flopped down and started chewing.

it's been about an hour, and she is still chewing. Every so often, she will rub her chin over the bone. The wind is picking up, and storms could slide in later. I hope she and King** get at least an hour or so of chew time before they have to come in...although knowing Gaby, she may not leave that bone behind even if the rain does whip through.

**I can;t see King, but I assume he's still chewing. At least he didn't do what he always did when I gave bones to him and Mickey. Back then, he would bury his, then hover around and wait for the opportunity to swipe Mickey's.

Distant--and on occasion, not so distant--thunder. King has taken refuge behind the couch. It's raining, and given how wet spring and early summer was, I never thought that we'd reach the point where we needed it. But we do. July was dry and August hasn't been much better. Yea--don't have to water tonight.

Tried another Black Crim today. It was a deeper mahoghany color than the first one, and much juicier. A hint of the variety's characteristic saltiness, but still not impressed. These were last year's seeds--can the quality of the fruit deteriorate if the seeds are older?

I think for next year, I will hunt for a cool weather variety to have in reserve. I don't think that temps in the 70s do Black Crims any favors. Some of those tomatoes have been hanging green on the vine for weeks now. The weather of the last week has kicked them into ripening, but we're supposed to slip back into the 70s by next weekend, which means that things will likely slow down again.

...found another ex-mouse in the backyard this morning. That's three so far.
