Thunder

Lightning. Two dogs at my feet. I tried bringing them both up on the couch with me, but that didn't work. Gaby was fine, but King tried to climb atop the back of the couch. I don't know what he thought that would accomplish, since he wouldn't exactly be hiding in that location.

Anyway. The storms look very nasty. I took down all the hanging baskets in case of high winds, and am keeping my fingers crossed that the power stays on.

Love those Midwest summers.

A nasty line of storms moved through last night, lots of red unto violet on the radar that brought with it some Florida-quality rains. The power went off at about 1am, before the damned rains even started, sending all sorts of power supplies and battery back-ups into beepy-beepy-beepy mode. Lightning lit up the skies to daylight brightness, and some cracks of thunder were really cracky. King was not happy (see previous post). Gaby seemed a little less perturbed, but they both still did the Velcro Dog act, following me from room to room, then getting in front of me and stopping (King) or weaving around my feet and lying down in a place where I would be sure to stumble over them (Gaby).

The rains started shortly after the power went off, and I spent two hours wandering with the flashlight listening to them pound away. Not much wind, which was fortunate. I had taken down all the hanging baskets, but the rains were such that I feared for my evergreens, so. Glad about the lack of wind beneath my wings. I have cable phone service, but the cable modem has a battery back up, so I was still able to use the corded landline to call ComEd, and was told that they expected to get the power back on around 4am. Checked the basement a few times. It took a while for the window well to fill to the point where leaking started, but in the meantime the battery back-up sump pump kicked in so I felt better. I don't know why it amazes me when tech works the way it's supposed to, but it does.

I let Gaby out into the rain at about 3am because she was making signs that She Really Had To Go. After 5-10 minutes, she was still out there--I looked out to find her poking at something in the middle of the lawn. I suspect a toad or a sodden earthworm. Whatever it was, it was neither the time nor the place, so I yelled at her to get cracking, and she trotted off to her Sekrit Hideaway behind the garage. After another 5-10 minutes, another check of the toad/earthworm, and a little more yelling, I got her back inside. Didn't quite manage to get her toweled off before she shook water all over the place. King got wet as a result, and had to shake as well. Whole lotta shaking going on. So, storms apparently don't bother Miz Gaby. She just wants hugs because King is getting hugs and she doesn't want to be left out.

I had been working when the power went off. Muttered a bit, but you can't do anything about it, can you? Gave up around 4ish and went to bed. No, power hadn't returned as was originally told. Was awakened at 530am by lights and a big dog asking me where all the dark went. Fell back asleep, only to awake 45 minutes later to darkness and more beeping--what ComEd giveth, they apparently had to take away. But, things came back on for good around 615am. I went back to sleep for a couple of hours, and am now half-awake and completely turned around time and writing-wise.

And it's 10am, and it's thundering again. Not as bad as last night, but we will still get more rain. The ground had absorbed much of what fell overnight. I don't know where it puts it, really. I only know that by Sunday, the grass will be about six inches higher.

Both dogs are asleep around my chair. They must be exhausted.

The new TV came on with no issues when I hit the power button. Interfaced with the cable box just fine. See comment above about tech that works.

I worried about how the garden would come through the pounding, but all is apparently OK but for one battered cilantro that looks a little leaning-tower. I should cage it for support. Later.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record.

More storms headed our way. I hope the power doesn't go out again.

Tornado sirens just turned off.
