May. 2nd, 2009 09:55 pmHosta are toxic to dogs. They contain saponins, which can cause varying degrees of GI upset depending on how much the dog has ingested. Vomiting, diarrhea, depression may occur, but in most cases the dog will recover on its own. Withhold food and water for several hours and monitor the situation. Some vomiting may occur--if it continues, the dog may need to be taken to the clinic for treatment for nausea and dehydration.
This PSA brought to you by Saturday night, life with dogs, and the letter G.
UPDATE: According to the ASPCA Poison Center, hosta are toxic. Yet I am finding websites stating that they are good additions to a dog-safe garden. I'm going to go with the info from the ASPCA, of course, but I am hoping that the difference of opinion indicates that there is some safety margin here.
The patient was pacing and licking her lips for a little while. Playing with King. She's sleeping at my feet now.
I should be writing, but that isn't going too well. I don't even care that the Bulls lost.
