a minor yea!

The grill works!

I phoned Customer Service. Apparently the removable grill/griddle needs to be aligned a certain way with the base for the heating element to work. I flipped things around, plugged the unit in, and presto, it lit up!

I asked if this was in the manual, because I had actually read the thing and didn't see anything about alignment. I am being emailed an updated manual, which I'm guessing means that this important tip wasn't noted in the original instructions.

I'd like to think that I would have figured it out eventually, but anyhoo. Grill works.

You do it to yourself

Go ahead. Make protag's Dad a woodworker. Because if you do it right, you'll make the plot hinge on something that requires a lot of research, the checking and rechecking and working out of which will drive you nuttier than the brain research did.

Woodworking. Not carpentry.

And so it goes...
