Thought for the day

The Matrix would be a completely different film today because of cellphones. Unless you could think of a reason why landlines needed to be used, a lot of the suspense, not to mention the plot, would need to be reworked.

...I always thought the hard wiring of the phone lines, the physical connection into the Matrix (psychological or not) was the reason landlines were used. I mean, it was made in what, 1999? Cell phones weren't as ubiquitous then as they are now, but a fair number of people had them.

That's what I wondered, too. I mean, they did show one guy with a cell phone. Neo could talk to the ship with it, but couldn't port back to his body.

I'm just not sure that they could have the same set-up now without some explanation. Phone booths have pretty much gone the way of the dodo. A significant portion of the potential audience might never have seen one or even ever used a landline phone.
