My Tricks or Treating years fell around the time that people first started worrying about candy tampering. You’d read the occasional newspaper story about kids finding needles or razor blades in apples, but the move toward well-sealed store-bought treats had only just started. My friends and I still got apples. Homemade popcorn balls and cookies. And every so often, coins. Pennies, mostly–I lived in a small town with a store that sold penny candies, so we didn’t turn up our noses at the things. But sometimes you were given a nickel or dime, which got you an entire candy bar or box. Necco wafers–those things were weird. Zero bars, with polar bears on the wrappers. At least, I think there were polar bears.

I loved Bit O’Honey. Those wacky wrappety-wrapped pieces. I still like it, but the stuff seems softer now. Between Bit O’Honey and Bonomo Turkish Taffy, I’m lucky I still have teeth.

My TorT years are I think earlier than yours. Treats were mostly homemade stuff, cookies or brownies.

Real candy bars were an especially fine treat when you got them. I liked Zero bars but my favorite were Sky bars. I still like Necco wafers but then I'm weird so it seems fitting. Pennies were better than apples. We always had apples at home, pennies for candy were harder to come by.

I tried Necco's every so often, but they never clicked. Maybe because I always got the licorice, and I'm not a licorice fan.

Never tried Sky bars.

When I was real little and still lived in Buffalo, we would get flying saucers. They were little hollow wafer UFOs filled with multicolored nonpareils.

Sky bars were good if you couldn't make up your mind what you wanted or didn't want to choose. It was like a candy strip of ravioli. One segment filled with carmel, one marshmallow, one chocolate cream and one peanut butter. I think they were mostly a New England thing because no one here in Michigan has ever heard of them.
