We’re under a wind advisory until the early morning. I firmed up the tomato plant stakes, but the ground it is wet and the wind it is strong. I think I’ll be lucky if the things aren’t leaning 45 degrees in the morning.

Yup, we’re teetering on the brink of October and I still have tomatoes on the vine. The Siberian is pretty much toast, but the Aunt Ginny’s Purple is semi-loaded. Large fruits, at least a dozen. But they are still green, and therein lies the dilemma. Temps will drop tonight and remain low tomorrow, with daytime highs in the 50s and overnight lows in the 40s. 70s expected next week, but that’s next week. There’s no danger of a freeze, but I am kinda concerned about what a few chilly nights could do to tomatoey flavor. Then there’s the fact that the leaves are browning, and the little stem crown thingies are starting to brown as well.

Guess I’ll play it by ear. I may be cutting and bagging tomatoes at the crack of dawn, who knows?

In other news, I was digging through the refrigerator bins when I found a sack of limes in the process of turning for the worse. I flailed for a bit, trying to recall why I bought the damned things when I never know what to do with them. Then I juiced them and made lime vinaigrette. Wouldn’t you know, I liked it better than the lemon version. Lighter flavor. Citrus freshness without the lemony bite.

Aren’t you thrilled to know this?

Anyway, I have work to do. The wind is roaring, and I’m wondering how much tree wreckage I will find scattered across the lawn in the morning.

Fingers crossed the wind doesn't do much damage.

Would putting a black garbage bag over your nearly-ripe tomatoes help them survive this week until the weather improves again? Would keep them warm by day, for sure.

That's an idea. Tomorrow night will be the real chiller, so I may try it. Bagging them tonight would be an exercise in futility.

I checked--the Aunt Ginny is already listing. It's leaning against one of the chain link panels that I used to wall off the raised bed, so it is getting some support. But the wind is hitting at just the right--or wrong--angle. I took down the hanging baskets for fear they wouldn't be hanging for long.
