The blog is getting pounded with spam tonight. Mostly Facebook links w/ gmail accounts. Not sure if they’re quick ‘n’ dirty set-ups or hacks. Make sure your accounts are secure.

Spam quality is pathetic. My postings have “saved much time.” Key words misspelled. Where are the imaginative names, the fortunes awaiting me if I send key personal information to an email address in Serbia? Dull, dull, dull. Sherlock-shooting-the-wall dull. Try harder, you dull people!

I love Akismet. Have I mentioned that?

Not much new. Had the furnace check. Outside temp at the time? About 82 degrees. Got a bit warm inside, yes.

Watched “The Girl Who Waited.” I can’t say I enjoy an episode like that. Too emotional. Too sad. I wanted them to save Rory the Robot, too–isn’t that idiotic? And we got to see a little more of the manipulative chill behind the bow tie.

It’s a wonder that more companions don’t come to hate the Doctor.

I have come to think that Doctor Who (and even moreso, Torchwood) is a horror story wrapped in sugar coating, and the Doctor (Jack Harkness) is the monster. I still like it - though I haven't seen any of the Matt Smith shows past the Christmas special due to not having cable any more, and Netflix isn't carrying Season 6 yet.

The best Dr Who's, imho, are the horror stories. "Blink" comes to mind. But the Matt Smith eps are exploring the Doctor-as-monster more than previous incarnations, perhaps with the exception of the DT "Waters of Mars" time period, during which the Dr's power went to his head a bit.

Well, there are the ones presented as horror stories, as in "Blink" which WAS OH WOW *SO* good! but there is also the continuing subtext or undercurrent that's been running since Ecclestone's tenure, and seems only to be getting darker. It almost (IMO) puts to shame the purported *bouncy happy adventure escapism* reputation that I'd always thought Doctor Who had - though I have to say, I've watched only a few of the old series, with Tom Baker, and remember very little from them. Maybe it's always been like that.

The Baker episodes, etc, iirc, dealt more with outside menace than the danger that the Doctor himself posed. The new series is exploring the Doctor's darkness, and the violence in his past, to a much greater degree. They're often fun, but they're not often "light."
