...but I'm doing it anyway.

I decided to join/buy/whatever .Mac, a bundled thingie that Apple offers. I mainly did it to get a copy of Virex, the antivirus program, since the other places that sold Virex only seemed to offer multiple licenses. McAfee is the company behind Virex. Giving them my money doesn't thrill me, but the other Apple antiviral I found is offered by Norton, and they've irritated me over the years even more than McAfee has. Granted, these were PC issues, and I hope to avoid similar problems with this account. Hopefully McAfee won't bombard my .Mac email addy with spam as they have my main addresses.

In addition to the antiviral, I also joined .Mac to get some server storage space. 100MB worth. Writers are paranoid about backing up their work sufficiently--some go as far as storing discs in safety deposit boxes. I usually have my books on both systems and floppy disc. Now with th iBook, I can burn it onto a CD, and save it to the server as well.

So, I downloaded Virex and scanned my system--apparently we're clean here. I know that Macs seldom if ever get infected, but I have heard of them acting as Typhoid Marys. Don't want to do that if I can avoid it.

One thing I need to do is update the OS. But damnation, the update file is over 50MB! It would take hours to download. I'm hoping that Apple can send a CD, even for a fee. I don't like the idea of not having a backup copy of the new OS in case something goes blooey with the installation.

My Prada purse and wallet arrived today. For no other reason than because I wanted to see what it felt like to own Designer, I went ahead and committed purchase (discount purchase, but purchase just the same). The Earth didn't move when I opened the shipping box, but they're nice pieces. The wallet has a very deep currency pocket--you can tell it's made to accommodate bills larger than US dollars. The credit card slots are *tight*, though. They're going to have to stretch a bit before I can remove the cards easily. Now it's a case of get-a-grip-and-hope-the-thing-doesn't-break.

The purse is on the small side, although it looks like it will be able to hold the wallet/PDA/phone/checkbooks with no problem. I knew this when I bought it, but I didn't like the styling of the other bags on the site and I wasn't going to pay retail or risk an eBay purchase for something bigger. So, we did something Fun without breaking the bank. Tomorrow, we visit the hardware store, which given past experience, just might lead to bank-breaking and more besides. Better than office supply stores, almost. I just need to avoid the light fixture department because I really want to replace the ceiling light over the kitchen sink and I never have done anything electrical in my life outside of undergrad physics lab. Do I really want to risk changing a light fixture?

I should just stick to lawn tool hooks. And maybe a bag or two of mulch...

Probably this is the wrong kind of advice, from your pocketbook's perspective, but light-fixture changing is pretty easy. We've done almost every single one in the condo except the bizarro chandelier (whose days are numbered) and there've been no mishaps yet!

Ditto. As long as the wiring is in good condition, no problem.

Argh--encouragement.

Turns out that when I went to the hardware store this morning, I forgot to take along my rewards check. In addition, the clerk gave me a survey form--I call the number, answer a few questions, and get an authorization code good for $3.00. Add that to the $10.00 check, and I have enough for a small fixture. Not that that's all I'll spend, but in theory it might work.
