You do get a chance to get inside the Jackal's head in the book, but those glimpses don't make up for the pages and pages of exposition that slow down the story (imho). The movie moves, and has the advantage of being able to show in a very short scene what would require pages of description in a book. If you have a chance to rent it, you might give it a shot.
