ksmith: (gaby2)

Vet called late this morning to let me know that Gaby came through the teeth-cleaning just fine. She was thrilled with the before&after photos, and asked if she could use them for a fundraiser next month. They’re holding a to-do to raise money to cover medical costs for rescue and homeless pets, and Gaby’s photos will be added to a poster containing photos of past rescues.

I’m glad I thought to print out the pictures. I hope someone sees them and decides to adopt a homeless dog or cat.

Wonderful! Besides the weight gain, the big difference is how happy Gaby looks in the "now". In the first, she looks like a dog who wants to be happy, and could be happy, but isn't sure she'll be allowed to be happy. In the second, she's clearly happy and confident that this is home.

She looked so worried Before. Part of it was the thinness of her face, I'm sure, along with illness. But part of it must have been uncertainty. As I said further down in the comments, she had been through an awful lot in that week--abandoned once, adopted midweek and taken to a strange place (I forgot to mention that in this update), then brought back the next day. Then the next day, along comes this lady with a big black dog. Yes, she'd seen them before, and even given her paw to the lady, but what did it mean?

Now she knows that it means that she can awaken me at 2am to let her outside, and that all the couch is belong to her. It just took us a while to get it all straightened out.

Reminds me of the cat we adopted earlier this year. He was SO skinny when we got him. We think the other cats at the foster home he was in intimidated him out of the food bowl so we fed him separately for a while. He's now known as Chaucer-chunk because he's put on almost a little too much weight.

Gaby's been within a pound or two of 45 lbs for about a year now. I feed her 3x a day so that a big wodge of food doesn't hit her wonky gut at one time--during the winter, she eats every meal, but during the summer, she'll often skip one or two meals one day, then eat all three the next. A big difference from King, who doesn't know the meaning of moderation. I think he would eat himself sick if he had the chance, but that's not an unknown problem with Labs and Lab mixes.

Yay, Gaby! She's a hero dog now, too! I bet she'll inspire lots of adoptions. What a sweetie.

*snerk* "All the couch is belong to her." Sounds like my cats - humane society adoptees, all three, and danged if they aren't convinced they were BORN to empire.

Herself is lying next to me now, her head pressed against my leg. I can't move without waking her.
