Just prior to posting the news that one hit (and even slightly surpassed) one's 1250 word goal for the day IS NOT the time to read the blog entry of a writer who managed close to 20,000. I know. Everyone works differently and if I ever wrote a 20K blitz in a one-day period, you could scrape the remains off my office chair and sprinkle them over King's kennel, or something.

In any event, finished the lost chapter. It's ok for first draft. Lost some writing time due to illness and such--not a cold, but a summer-like allergy assault that hit me out of nowhere. Allerest is a Good Thing.

And hey, looks like next chapter will be a Jani-Lucien chapter. Those are always fun.

Current reading--Ian Rankin's Fleshmarket Alley, which was, according to a notation on the copyright page, sold as Fleshmarket Close in the UK. I am awaiting the arrival of Samuel R. Delaney's ABOUT WRITING, which I read about in Justine Larbalestier's blog, [livejournal.com profile] larbalestier . I occasionally like to read books on writing. A favorite is Robert McKee's STORY, which, granted, discusses screenwriting, but which I think contains a lot of good information about structure, archetypes, and why some stories work while others don't.

Oh well. Off to read some Rankin.

I have had a 17,000 word day. It burned me out for four months at least.

I'm sticking to my thousand a day.

Well, I wrote 1600 words that day and was feeling like a queen till I saw [livejournal.com profile] jaylake's entry. Then i had to remind myself that Mr. Lake Is Not Like Ordinary Men and moved on.

1250 is a great run for a day. Be proud and pleased with yourself. You deserve to be.

Darlin', Jay Lake is a wonderful man with a puckish sense of humor when it comes to shirts. He is also a freak of nature when it comes to output. Admire it as you would admire the Mona Lisa, then put it from your mind.

If you hate the Delany book, it's not my fault! Scott's reading it now and loving it. But I'm still always nervous when anyone buys a book on my say so!

Congrats on your writing day. Like you I'm physically incapable of writing 20 thou words in a day. More power to Jay Lake. But, definitely, each to their own. I learned a while ago that more than 2 thou a day kills me and even then I need two days off a week.

My best day ever was about 23 manuscript pages. A bit over 5000 words, depending on font and margins. I couldn't write the next day.

7-8 manuscript pages/day, with occasional forays into 10-15 pages, is my usual output.

As a side note, I overtyped 'manuscript', and wound up with 'manuscrapit', which most times just about covers it.

I don't think I could *type* that many words in a day, much less drag them out of my head.

I'm just happy that I got that blasted chapter finished.

I think I'll probably like the Delaney book.

I learned a while ago that more than 2 thou a day kills me and even then I need two days off a week.

I'm glad to see this because when I read of some other writers' output, I feel like such a slacker. But it's whatever you can do.
