This is fascinating in a Six Degrees of Separation kind of way. It will be very interesting to see how it plays out, and how much of JT Leroy's acceptance came from the quality of the writing and how much from the perception of the writer.

I think that folks will definitely feel conned. The real author of the works will likely maintain that no one was interested in reading those books when they knew a middle-aged woman wrote them, and that may well be the case--there's a certain brand of confession lit that is assumed to contain large amounts of autobiography even if it's called fiction, and I honestly don't know whether these books are labeled fiction or non.

I believe it was fiction that was supposed to be autobiographical. And it may be--but it happened 25 years ago, and she just used the newer names for things...
