It's hard to explain, but when the weather is rotten like it is now--raining/sleeting, windy--I appreciate Christmas lights even more than I do when it's snowing. They're bright, and warming even though they're not warm themselves. And they're sealed, so they won't short out and trip the circuit breakers. They're like the campfire that keeps the nasties away.
