A question for train travelers

ksmithDo ticket prices bounce around like they do for airline tickets? I want to travel to NYC in the spring, and just checked the cost of a round trip ticket from Chicago to Penn Station. It's almost half the cost that it was ten years ago, and I'm wondering if that's because I'm checking months in advance?
