Some folks maintain that while the trailer indeed stinks, the movie itself is good.
I doubt I'll see it. My fave version of P&P is the 80s David-Rintoul-as-Darcy version, and yes, I preferred him to Colin Firth. I like Colin Firth, but I'll take tall, dark, and patrician over blond and slightly blowsy any day. But that's just me.
I also hated the on-the-nose moralizing at the end of the Firth version. We have already figured out how everyone will end up, as well as what marriage means. We don't need it shoved down our throats with a plunger.
Another favorite performance in the Rintoul version was Barbara Shelley as Aunt Gardiner. She defined that character for me--an island of common sense with a voice like warm maple syrup.
You should see it. It is a most excellent movie about a young woman coming of age in a culturally repressed environment. That entry also mentions the Bride and Prejudice version by Gurinder Chadra, which is an excellent version.
