the rest of the weekend
Jun. 22nd, 2008 03:04 pmYesterday was busy--groceries, vacuuming--I think the guys are shedding because I emptied the thing 3x, laundry. Used up some ripe bananas and made some banana bread. Transplanted some grocery store herb plants into the patio garden thingie (which I hope will be able to receive the tomato plants in another week or two). Also wrote 1020 words, which made me happy.
Today was going to be busier than a usual Sunday. Early last month i bought a ticket for today's show at the Tempel Lipizzan Farm, which would start at 1pm. Then a couple of weeks ago, I received the pledge packet for the dog walk at the shelter where I got Mickey. Guess which day they decided to hold the walk this year? Yup, starting at 11am. I thought about blowing it off, but I like to support the shelter. The show ticket wasn't refundable/exchangeable, but it wasn't expensive, and there are two shows a week during the summer. There was a 60% chance of rain, which would have put the kibosh on the walk. In the end I decided to play it by ear. I'd go to the walk, see how it went, and go on to the show or not depending.
It rained during my personal dog walk, of course, but by the time I left to go to the shelter, it was blue sky sunny. I arrived early, and as expected found that a number of other folks had as well--cars lined one side of the road, and folks were already out walking dogs.
I turned in my pledge sheet, then waited for a dog. I was given a sweet girl named Karma, a wiry black lab mix who looked enough like Mickey to be his sister. Very playful. But. A puller who wanted to say Hi! to every dog we passed. I was glad I wore running shoes because I did have to jog at one point just to keep her from pulling so hard--she was wearing a choke collar, and was absolutely oblivious to the pressure when other dogs were around. Toward the end of the walk, she settled a little. The sun was out and she was panting and thirsty, and as soon as we reentered the shelter entry area, she stepped into one of the wading pools they had set out around the place. She didn't sit, just drank/walked through the water. I talked to folks while she rested.
Then someone came through the gate with a dog, and Karma left the pool and took off toward them. I was right at the pool's edge, standing at just the right/wrong angle--Karma pulled me, and I tripped over the rim of the pool and went right in, handbag and all.
Note--my old model Overland Equipment handbag really is waterproof. The only water that got in the main compartment was the stuff that splashed in because I didn't zip the top all the way. The bag was dripping, but my camera, cell phone, inhaler--all were OK. I don't know what possessed me to use it--it had been sitting in my closet for a couple of years, and I debated getting rid of it more than once.
I had considered wearing white pants. Really glad I had decided against them and went instead with dog walking clothes, mustard brown Gramicci hiking pants and a dark grey t-shirt. The problem with Gramiccis, though, is that they're cotton. Heavy cotton. They soaked up a lot of water, as did my sneakers. I thought I could walk around in the sun and dry, but after 15 minutes it became obvious that if I wanted to go to the Lipp show without going *squoosh* every time I moved, I would need to go home and change first. So I left the cookout and the bake sale and the puppies and headed home.
On the way, I decided to give myself a break. I ate the Tempel ticket, and hope to go during my vacation week. Wet clothes are draped over the laundry basket. Sneakers and handbag are drying out on the deck. Had a cuppa coffee and a slice of banana bread, which came out really well. Getting ready to get to work.
And that was my Sunday so far...
