Pronunciation question

Is Susan's surname pronounced Sto Heelit (long e) or Sto Hellit (short e)?

I suspect Sto Hellit, but I'm just making sure...

I'd go for the second, based on the author's wit. Though, one must ask, why?

I have a feeling it's "Hellit," but when I read the words, I hear it as "Heelit" in my head. It's stuck there, even if it's wrong.
