need a break
Apr. 13th, 2004 11:26 amThe South Seas. Technicolor drinks with umbrellas and pineapple slices sticking out the top. Cabana boys that all look like Cary Elwes and give great massages to boot.
I woke up at 2 this morning. Couldn't go back to sleep. Thoughts took off at Mach 10, the way they do at such times. Finally decided that some things that had been hanging over my head were going to be put off until June, dammit. Maybe longer--I would deal with them when I was ready and not one second before. Problem was, it took me until 530 to reach that decision.
I managed to grab another hour's sleep before crawling out of bed. I am tired now, and an odd combo of cranky and relieved. Cranky because I'm tired, but relieved because I gave myself a bit of a break.
I found out this morning that a friend from work, an admin I'd known for almost 16 years, passed away yesterday. We had spoken just before I went to C'ville--she didn't look well, but I didn't push. We joked that the kennel bill for my dogs was going to cost more than my hotel--she wanted to see the numbers when I got back. I meant to send them, but I think she was already in the hospital by then.
Dianne was a Minnesota Vikings fan. Every fall, she'd decorate her cube with purple and gold, especially when the Vikes played the Bears or the Packers. One year when the Bears beat the Vikes, iirc, she had to decorate her cube in Bears colors. Oh, the muttering.
Life is a keyboard. Over time, the keys disappear, one by one, and you're left trying to write the same script with fewer and fewer letters.
Wiscon is coming up next month. Many friends attending. I think I will need a con.
But a cabana boy with a drink in his hand wouldn't go amiss right now.

Date: 2004-04-13 11:54 am (UTC)I don't know if it's my imagination, but it seems people are dropping like flies lately. Maybe it's Mercury Retrograde, maybe it's just that Baby Boomers are hitting the statistical wall (and the reason my life insurance cost more than doubles every five years). Whichever, it's very annoying and I wish they'd all stop. {whine mode off now}
Cabana boys. Heck, I'd take a replay of one afternoon in Puerta Vallerta with a great book and a fresh pina colada every hour delivered right to my beach chair. But if one of the cabana boys looks (even with my glasses off) like Orlando Bloom, may I have dibs?

Date: 2004-04-13 05:38 pm (UTC)I was moved to another department in a reorg. Another building. I didn't see her too often over the past couple of years, but she was always happy to see me. We'd spend time playing catch-up before going about our business.
I'm going to miss her.
