How do you pronounce "sgàil"? I've found the meaning, but not the pronunciation.

On that note, which aspect of the word "shadow" connotes protection--is it sgàil or sgàth, and if it is the latter, how do you pronounce it?

Thanks to anyone who can give a hint...

The two people I know of who could help you are both out of town. Julianne Lee (you know her as sff.people.ardian) is in Glasgow, and Laura Underwood is also traveling. However, from what I saw in various pronunciation guides, it looks like those two words are pronouced pretty much the way they look to an English speaker.

I may ask them, because Celtic can be strange. A female name based on sgàth, Scathach, is promounced SKAW-hak, from Old Irish scath "shadow, shade". Without any clue, I'd have pronounced it sca-tatch, which ain't right.

I also have to make sure I can use sgàil/sgàth as a male name, and if not, that there's a male version somewhere.

Oh yeah. It still doesn't seem right that Sinead is pronouced "Shin-ayd" - there's no "sh" in there anywhere, and how do they get "ayd" out of "ead?"

[livejournal.com profile] irongall aka Terry McGarry is the best source I know. Drop her an email, she's pretty good about keeping up despite her superhero alias of
"Too Many Email Addresses Woman"

Good luck!
