I don't want to speak too soon, but...

...MY HP 1100 IS WORKING AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Keyspan USB-parallel adapter arrived today. I was going to avoid messing with it today, but the stubborns got the better of me. I uninstalled all the previous software, drivers and whatnot, then followed the Keyspan instructions. They direct you to GimpPrint for drivers, a place I hadn't heard of before.

ANYway, downloaded the drivers, followed by the Keyspan configuration software. Installed the GimpPrint stuff with no problem, but I'm not sure the Keyspan stuff installed. I tried to open the file to install it, and it said it couldn't open becasue it didn't have an application attached and I needed to choose one. I choose Printer Set-Up--no clue if that was the right thing or not, or if it even worked. Figured I screwed things up, but pushed onward. GimpPrint didn't have a driver specifically for the HP 1100, but said that folks had luck with HP LJ 6-series drivers, so I set up the printer with that driver. Choose a page to print, and held my breath.

IT PRINTED!!

So, I took things a step further and printed an entire chapter of J5. It printed, too--the only issue I saw was that the page number in the header looked a little lighter than all the other text, but knowing Word, that may be an issue with the font in the Style.

I can't believe the blasted thing is working. I hope it lasts--I have three unopened toner cartridges downstairs.

I think so. *g*

Seems you have to give a little to get a little, though. I think the USB-parallel connection messed up the iMac's ability to go into Sleep mode. I tried to do that last night, and the thing locked up--no display, no keyboard response, no Sleep light. Fans going at top speed. I had to unplug the thing to shut it down--when it rebooted, it was fine. A quick search of Mac troubleshooting sites showed that this problem has happened before due to come device connection--in the case I found, it was a Firewire connection.

I've found Sleep to be problematic in the past, though, and according to Macfolk I've spoken with, it's not really necessary to sleep you system. So I may simply skip it. Hopefully, this won't all build into some major system crash. If it does, oh well, that's why I have the iBook for backup and the OS on DVD.
