Life with dogs

Maybe you shouldn't read this if you're eating.
I don't know what animal came around here during the night. Whichever it is, it left its calling card, namely, a pile of the most odiferous crap imaginable. I don't know what this thing eats, or whether it's carnivore, omnivore, or herbivore--don't carnivores have the worst smelling crap due to all the amino acids or something? Whatever it was, It may have been the thing that sent King barking at oh-hell-thirty this morning as it made its deposit.
I let the boys out for their afternoon run. Mickey found the mother lode first and dove in, smearing his upper leg, shoulder, and the side of his neck to the ear. It was already getting dark, and while I could smell that all-too-familiar smell--King used to dive into it every chance he got when he ran the fields--I couldn't place it until I brought the two idiots inside and saw Mickey's besmeared condition. Then came the whap in the nose.
Grabbed a bucket, some old towels, and some Aveda shampoo--not for dogs but all I could find on short notice. Herded King and Mickey outside, then tried to wipe down and lather up Mickey while King teased me with a log he'd grabbed off the woodpile. King then decided that Mickey was getting a treat that he wasn't and that *he* wanted to be wiped down, too, so he dropped the log, and wedged in front of me. I gave him a little wipe on the head and told him he was a Good Puppy because he didn't smell like a rendering plant.
Got off Mickey's collar and hosed it down. Finished wiping him down while he squirmed and kept heading for the door--he's usually a very obedient dog, but he and King hadn't eaten since yesterday afternoon, and when Mickey's hungry, words don't tend to sink in.
Got them in. Fed them both. Mickey is currently napping the nap of the Aveda-smelling. Actually, a little of the icky is still detectable, so he may get another dip tonight.
