Life in the Twilight Zone
Apr. 7th, 2004 08:45 pmYesterday, temps hit the 70s. Now I'm hearing we could have snow this weekend. Of course, I already raked the dead leaf mulch away from the flower beds. I am not going to rake it back.
Not a lot of snow, and it wouldn't hang around long. But at this point, it's the principle of the thing.
I keep reminding myself that I usually need a jacket at Wiscon, which takes place over Memorial Day weekend. It takes a while to warm up up here. And after it does, I will no doubt start griping about that, too.
What I wish...what I wish is that I had my summer off, as in days of childhood. Oh, the things I could do if I had my summers off. Sleep, for one thing. Clean my desk. Build some bookcases in my basement (which is not a dank hole but is actually pretty dry) and ease the strain on the double-stacked bookshelves in my office. One day, a few of those particle board shelves are going to snap in two, and boy oh boy, won't that be fun.
Summers off. I wish.

Summers off...
Date: 2004-04-07 10:44 pm (UTC)The last (almost) two months I've been avoiding my Monday (Sunday, actually, 8 hours on a line that I hate, that inspires me to drive like a maniac (yeah, yeah, I know)), by using a variety of days off (from Sick to Banked Holidays...if I could have gotten the Superintendant to suspend me I would've, I asked, she refused)...the upshot is that 6 of the last 8 weeks I've had either three or four day weeks. Very nice. NMight actually have been productive if I hadn;t spent most of those weekends out in the wilderness murdering innocent shrubery.
If you are worried about particle-board failure, I'd recommend jamming them so there is a solid column of books from the floor to the top shelf approximately in the middle of the shelfs. I saw the results of a catastrophic bookshelf failure once. The top shelf failed, and the rest failed in turn. Not a pretty sight. 6 foot shelf, with heavy textbooks on the top.
