Spent some time reading the NYT columnists for the last time. As of tomorrow, I believe it is, you'll need to pay about $50 a year for the privilege, and overall, I don't think they're worth it. Dowd irritates me. I know before even reading the piece what Krugman and Herbert are going to say. Brooks strikes me as pompous and condescending, and Tierney is a flippin' joke.

But I like Frank Rich. In today's column, he predictably takes on the unfolding political mess that is part of the Katrina aftermath. Skewers the usual suspects--Shrub, Rove, Chertoff. But he ends the piece in a way that struck a chord with me. If you don't want to read the whole thing, this last paragraph is sufficient:

"What comes next? Having turned the page on Mr. Bush, the country hungers for a vision that is something other than either liberal boilerplate or Rovian stagecraft. At this point, merely plain old competence, integrity and heart might do."

To which I add, Amen.
