In the gloaming

Registration may be required to access this WP story about Voyager 1's entry into regions of space unknown, but I think it's worth it.

After a storied, 28-year odyssey, NASA's venerable Voyager 1 spacecraft appears to have reached the edge of the solar system, a turbulent zone of near-nothingness where the solar wind begins to give way to interstellar space in a cosmic cataclysm known as "termination shock," scientists said yesterday.

And the spookiest line:

"The spacecraft knows nothing about what is going on," Stone said. "It is just sending us the data."

I'm trying to imagine what it may feel like to sit perched atop Voyager as it courses through space. What's the view like? What would I see? How would I feel?

If you're not tempted to intone, "Space...the final frontier..." I'd be disappointed.

Either that, or "Excuse me? When's the next comfort stop?"

"Are we there yet?"

I remember when Voyager set out. I was in grade school, it seemed like it'd be years and years before it reached anyplace at all.

And now it's beyond those places, setting out into parts truly unknown. How very cool.

Stars, lots and lots of stars, one rather bright one directly behind.

Bloody cold. Even worse than just after an arctic front in Wisconsin. Dries your sinuses out something fierce.

Also, very lonely with no internet connection.

Did I mention COLD!

Is Voyager I the one with the panel attached showing where it's from?

I ask for a reason to be revealed in my journal later...heh-heh-heh.
