My iBook must have felt left out after reading in other groups about the wonkiness of various of his brethren. He was fine when I shut him down last night. This morning, however, his dial-up modem refused to dial up--the thing would get stuck in a perpetual "Dialing--dialing" do-loop until I was compelled to Force Quit/Shut Down. It took three tries before I finally got on line.

More of the same this evening. Got stuck in Dialing, necessitating Force Quit. Reboot. Thought I would do a Repair Permissions via Macaroni, but when I tried to open up System Preferences via the Menu Bar (I know that's not the name, but I'm a refugee from the PC side of the Force), all I got was a bouncy-bouncy lightswitch. Another Force Quit. Tried the modem again. Phfft. System Preferences again. Phfft again. I think I rebooted a total of 4 times.

Finally, I went into System Preferences via Finder and got into Macaroni. Did the daily fix, which hadn't run in a few days. Then I repaired permissions. After that, I went into Library Cache and dumped some temp files. Then I opened up Internet Connection and tried dialing out that way. Success.

So here I am, hoping that the Tiger upgrade fixes whatever screwiness had overtaken this system. It never seemed as solid as the iMac desktop. I've also never had so many issues as when I started doing light housekeeping on a regular basis. 12 months with only the occasional glitch. Now they seem more frequent.

Finally got online via DSL. Tried to download/install OS X 10.3.9. Crashed in the middle, it did it did, and wouldn't come back again.

Called Apple Support. Followed instructions. Tried to open the thing in Safe Mode--no go. Had to start up by pressing down the Option key while starting--this lets you get to the screen where you can repair the disk. One volume (HSL?? can't remember) did require repairing.

I am now reinstalling the OS via Archive/reinstall. Luckily I had saved the wip to a pen drive before I started all this stuff.

"All this is available at our support website," the nice AppleCare guy said. "The first time I do something like this, I want a human on the other end of a phone," I responded.

Anyway, I'm off the phone, the OS is installing, and I have a headache. What a way to start a Saturday.
