So many people I know have blogs. They seem to enjoy posting to them even as they ignore other types of newsgroups. I'm not sure what the fascination is, which is one reason I'm here. What does blogging offer that other forms of online discourse don't, and how much of a timesink is it compared to other types of online discussion?

Who am I? My name is Kris. I write science fiction books, and sometimes as a result mutter quite a bit about the writing process. I have a day job that I'd like to change. I have a couple of dogs, and a house that takes some work to maintain. As my mood indicator says, I'm going through a restless phase right now. Maybe it's a midlife crisis, with the fear of the inevitable that it entails. I'd like to think that fear isn't the only driver, however, but that it's more the realization that I want to enjoy my work and other aspects of my life more than I do right now. That my life, even though it's at its midpoint, is still a work in progress rather than a set piece, and that I can still turn it into something that will provide me some measure of contentment.

I will be amazed if anyone reads this stuff. Some people put quite a bit of work into their blogs, with video clips and photos and links. Not sure if I will have the time to do that. I'm still not quite sure how all this will look when I post it--I downloaded iJournal from the Apple site, and beyond adding a Mood thingie, I haven't done any special formatting.

Oh well, let's post this and see how it looks...

This Forest format is too dark. Must change. Any comments on easy to read styles appreciated

I didn't see it as forest; I've tried that one. Do you know if you're using S1 or S2 layouts? (S2 has far more options, and is available on the free accounts too.) If you go to http://www.livejournal.com/manage/ (http://www.livejournal.com/manage/) and scroll down to "Customizations" you'll see the S1 and S2 options. You can also get there by clicking on Modify Journal then clicking back to the previous directory, Manage Account.
