The firecrackers have started popping in earnest, and King is pacing and whimpering. I've just dosed him with benedryl, which I hope settles him. Otherwise, it's going to be a damned long night.

I understand fireworks--colorful explosions and ohs and ahs. But firecrackers, noise for the sake of noise? I never understood the need. And given that I will need to deal with an upset dog for the bulk of what is supposed to be a relaxing evening, I am trying to suppress the nasty urge to find the sources of all those damned *pops* and shove long strings of the damned things up their collective asses. Then light them.

We have a fireworks ban due to drought, which the fireworks dealers are whining about (like THEY'RE going to fight the fires that start? Or pay for additional fire department time? Or magic enough water to fight the fires? Yes, it's tough on them. the drought is tough on EVERYBODY, but fires would be worse.)

I hope I won't hear even one, but knowing some of the types of people who move to rural areas "to be able to do what we want to" (e.g., let their dogs run loose, let their kids run loose, act stupid with firearms, etc.) I expect there will be some illegal fireworks and resulting fires. I hope nobody gets burned out (including us.)

I agree. I've got three terrified kitties. And cats will NOT be consoled.

Fireworks have never held any charms for me, anyway.

I'm waiting for them to start here. I had to make sure the hose is hooked up because one nasty spark gone awry and the forest could go up. Bah.

I thought the town fireworks would be tonight, but I guess they're saving them for tomorrow. So it's just occasional pops and booms. Some of them are soft enough for King to miss, but some are loud enough to drive him to his feet. He flops back down right away, though. I think that's the Benedryl working.

Hope you stay fire-free down there.

I think the Benedryl is working with King, at least to some extent. I'll have to dose him again tomorrow when the town has their fireworks display.

At least we're not dry here.

We usually have a huge illegal fireworks here, but a new law is in effect. Alas, I think the loud firecrackers are still allowed, and they're the worst. Still, it's been quiet so far; we'll get a taste this evening. And I think if you have a permit you're still allowed to light off stuff.
